RUN REPORT BY VLAD THE IMPOSTER Alistair Cook’s, ‘Letter from America’, used to be broadcast on the BBC World service just before sports round up started on Saturday’s. During my time in West Africa I became an avid listener because it brought at little culture into my otherwise chaotic life style surrounded by non-reflective’s. It also always used to make me late for the Saturday afternoon hash in Lagos! There are many interesting words in the English vocabulary such as the noun ‘culture’ meaning civilization, customs, life style, stage of development, breeding, education, refinement as opposed to the adjective, ‘cultured’ meaning accomplished, advanced, educated, erudite, well bred……and so it came to pass that we were entertained on this particular Monday Hash with a little Australian culture. Note - I do not use the word cultured at any point in my dictate.
Upon my arrival at the A site I was greeted by a full car park. The little white car who proceed me into the parking area being driven by a lumpy one of Thai pedigree then proceeded to perform a nine point deployment ‘around’ a parking space finally opting to take up sufficient space for two buses – another sort of culture!
Very few hashers deem to venture into central Pattaya these days to catch the bus, especially on grey days during the monsoon season. But then we are all doing our bit towards global warming!
The four hares could be seen strutting around the site dressed in artlessly manufactured convict’s apparel and handing out a printed resume covering their lineage – this is another word for culture.
Circle called. No new shoes. One particularly stupid returning hasher who should have been deported to Australia long ago iced for drinking beer before the run. The hares give a short abstract about the run and we are ON OUT down the road and along a track towards the jungle. Nice winding well marked trail through tall grass using paths made by the cattle from a nearby village to the first check. On left called before the pack had even started looking and we are onto another dirt road with the FRB’s beginning to stretch their legs. Straight thru checks and the pack only pause momentarily before again entering the jungle and starting to climb. The earlier rain had pushed up the humidity levels and so under the trees we all perspired “gently”. It was dripping out of my shorts! Single file yomping was the order of the day with no overtaking. Dry and wet stream beds and evidence that the hares had made an effort to cut a virgin path in places. (Perhaps they were trying to atone for last year’s VERY short endeavor). On down to the last check on familiar ground, left yet again and a short on in to the A site after almost 40 mins on trail. Free convict run mementos were given out by the hares which was a nice gesture, also free hotdogs and burger’s which were very well received by all attending.
To shower, and then sit down with a cold beer prior to the circle is one of the nice aspects of the Monday Hash…even the rain which sent many people rushing for umbrellas was refreshing.
The circle was called by the esteemed GM and the congregation formed, late attendees being iced for not paying attention. The raffle was drawn with the lucky winners receiving prizes supplied by the hares. A refreshing change of RA’s entertained us with their particular brand of culture before the hash hymn wound up proceedings and the gathering set off to the Scandi Bar for what should have been a ‘Dry Buddha Day’ holiday. I wonder!!!
